Frequently Asked Questions

What is managed identity in arm templates?

It's a best practice and a very convenient way to assign an identity (Service Principal) to an Azure resource. A new way to reference managed identities in ARM templates has been introduced recently and its not very well documented, read through for more details. What is Managed Identity?

How do I create a managed identity for an Azure resource?

First, you need to tell ARM that you want a managed identity for an Azure resource. It can be a Web site, Azure Function, Virtual Machine, AKS, etc. To do so, you add the identity section on your resource definition in your template. Here is an example of a system-assigned managed identity on a Azure Function.

Why can't I re-deploy my Azure arm template?

For example, this ARM template cannot be safely re-deployed, because the first step storage account creation will remove the encryption key. Azure ARM templates don't even have a way to check if a resource already exists to put some conditional logic on the init step, which is required only to get a system assigned managed identity.

Are there any arm templates for Azure Kubernetes Service?

There are multiple examples of ARM templates for deploying Kubernetes in Azure with advanced networking and etc. However, you can’t find any templates that use Managed Identity along with Azure Kubernetes Service.
